Chinese, Tang Dynasty
Foreign man, about AD 700 ? 756
Earthenware, pigment

Rich Chinese of the wealthy Tang Dynasty era sought the world’s best experts as groomsmen to care for their prized horses and camels. The hands of the foreign groomsman were probably originally holding the reins of a ceramic horse or camel.

This statue of everyday life was made for burial. It’s marvelous.
